Dianne,

Detox is only the first step for your friend. After his body is free of the physical symptoms of alcohol, he needs to attend some kind of rehab. He will learn that there is no acceptable level of alcohol for him. Beer, wine, or spirits all contain alcohol, and there is no one that is "better" than another.

I just went through 3 hellish days of helping a male friend detox from alcohol. The scariest day was when he had a siezure! He thinks it's due to lack of sleep becasue he had one before while he was doing meth years ago. (Thank goodness he doesn't have THAT problem anymore!!)

He wants to do better and knows that hard liquor makes him crazy but thinks that it's still okay to drink beer.

I wish he knew how many people were praying and hoping he'll stop drinking.

Maria,

I am sorry that your husband is in this condition. If he is in the ICU, he is getting the best care possible. He is on a ventilator because the alcohol in his system may cause his breathing to slow down or stop. It is possible to recover from alcohol poisoning, but there is a chance that he will have permanent brain damage. The extent of the damage wouldn't be known until he regains consciousness.

Take care.

Kim,

Itching is a common symptom of alcohol detox. If you are concerned about it, then you should be seen by a doctor. He or she may be able to recommend something that will treat the itching so that you will feel more comfortable.

I am a very heavy drinker. I have been drinking a tall bottle of rum, and a 6 pack for Mike's hard Lemonade DAILY for over 9 months. I have been sober about 24 hours, and I am itching like I have bugs. I have to be at work Monday, and just can't go to a hospital for detox. But I don't want to die either. I just started this job in November, and he is going on vacation Tuesday - Friday. I hate to say I picked a bad day to stop drinking. But I didn't buy a bottle today! So it is what it is. Any suggestions to be safe? Should I have 911 dialed into my cell phone?

Heather,

Your fiance is craving sweets right now because his alcohol consumption was putting his blood sugar out of whack. The problem with drinking a large amount of Pepsi is that it may cause him to gain weight. You could suggest that he eat smaller meals more often, say every three hours or so, to keep his blood sugar levels more constant.

My fiance is currently going thru detox, and I know that the road will be harder for him. I learned so much thru AA when I was a little girl, going thru it with my father who went to treatment. He became a recovering alcoholic. My question is, what kind of things can I give to him in order to subside the craving for alcohol, besides pepsi?
