Nicoderm CQ Patch
From LoveToKnow Recovery
The Nicoderm CQ patch is a three-step form of nicotine replacement therapy for people who wish to overcome nicotine addiction. It gives the user a small, controlled dose of nicotine to fight the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The product is available online or at your local pharmacy.
Using the Nicoderm CQ Patch
The Nicoderm patch should only be used by people who have already quit smoking. Continuing to smoke, chew tobacco, or use other products that contain nicotine can result in a nicotine overdose.
The Nicoderm CQ patch is available in three different doses. Make sure you purchase the correct package for your needs.
- The Step 1 (21mg) package is the initial treatment for Weeks 1-6.
- The Step 2 (14mg) package is the step down treatment for Weeks 7-8.
- The Step 3 (7mg) package is the step down treatment for Weeks 9-10.
The patch should be applied to a skin that is clean, dry, and hairless. You should apply the patch in a different spot each day. Always wash your hands after removing or applying the Nicoderm patch.
Most people wear the Nicoderm CQ patch for 16 hours. However, if you crave cigarettes in the morning, you may wear the patch for a full 24 hours. After 24 hours, the patch will start to lose its strength and need to be replaced.
Since the Nicoderm patch contains a small dose of nicotine, this product can’t be sold to people under the age of 18. If you’re a teenage smoker, contact your healthcare professional for advice on how to quit smoking.
Side Effects
Like most medications, the Nicoderm CQ patch has been known to cause certain side effects. While not everyone will experience these symptoms, it’s a good idea to be aware of the potential risk. The most common side effects of the Nicoderm patch include:
- Rashes
- Vivid dreams
- Sleep disruptions
- Irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Dizziness
If you are concerned about potential side effects from the Nicoderm CQ patch, contact your healthcare provider. He/she may be able to recommend an alternative nicotine replacement therapy.
Warnings
Although the Nicoderm CQ patch is very effective when used properly, this medication is not right for everyone.
- The patch may interfere with the effectiveness of antidepressants or prescription medications asthma. Ask your healthcare provider to adjust your medication dosage before beginning this form of nicotine replacement therapy.
- The Nicoderm CQ patch should be kept away from children and pets. Even a used patch contains enough nicotine to be harmful. If you suspect a case of accidental indigestion, contact your local poison control center.

- If you are a nursing mother, the nicotine in the patch can be passed to your baby through your breast milk. Contact your healthcare provider to see if the patch is the right choice for you.
Comments
Victoria,
You did the right thing by discontinuing use of the patch. The patch can cause skin irritations and I would suggest that you get the brown spots looked at by a doctor who can tell you whether they are a cause for concern or not.

You can use the patch for a full 24 hours if you like. After that point, you will need to change it. If you have cravings for a cigarette first thing in the morning, you can use the patch before bed.
