From Heroin Addict to Mayor and Doctor
An online magazine, Join Together from Columbia University, recently published an article about one of their students, Donald Kurth. In his 20s, Kurth was a heroin user living on the streets. Thieves mugged and stabbed him. It was at this point that he knew that he had to do something about his addiction. Daytop therapeutic community in New York took him in and helped him begin his heroin addiction recovery.
Once clean, Kurth applied to Columbia University where he was enrolled despite his average grades and history of arrest. His dedication to change his life became reality when he graduated with honors and enrolled in medical school at Columbia University.
Kurth is now the Chief of Addiction Medicine at Loma Linda University's Behavioral Medical Center and the mayor of the city of Rancho Cucamonga.
Heroin Addict in Recovery Opens Treatment Center
An online news website, UCA News reports a story about Yousaff Bhatti in Pakistan. He smoked heroin for three years. It wasn't until his wife and children persuaded him to quit that he began recovery.
Presently, Bhatti helps other heroin addicts in recovery in his free treatment and residential facilities. His program is the only church-affiliated drug treatment center in the Faisalabad diocese.
Beginning Heroin Addiction Recovery with Faith
In a personal testimony on a Catholic website, AD 2000, a heroin addict in recovery talks about the struggle with addiction. This person started using heroin at age 17 and by age 19 was completely controlled by the drug. The addict lost friends to the drug by death, but it wasn't enough to convince her to quit. The addict tried rehabilitation centers, Narcotics Anonymous and a methadone program twice, but it didn't help. The addict continued to use 12 times a day and prayed with every injection.
Faith in God is what prompted this addict's recovery from heroin addiction. Realizing that the Lord's plan didn't include heroin addicition, this person entered a spiritual drug addiction program and was able to get clean.
Finding Your Jump to Recovery
In each of these stories, you read about a turning point each person faced before they finally committed to heroin addiction recovery. Finding what motivates people to begin recovery has to do with what they believe is worth letting go of their addiction in order to keep. They may fear death from overdose, arrest, loss of loved ones or a complete loss of faith. They need to find something that is important to them, and see how heroin is taking that from them. Once they do this, they need to go through treatment with the constant thought that they are doing this for themselves and what is important to them. It will be difficult, but with perseverance and by taking recovery one day at a time, anyone can become a former heroin addict.
