Effects of Using Crack Cocaine

The Effects of Crack Cocaine

The effects of crack cocaine depend on how the drug is ingested, the amount of the dose and an individual's tolerance to the drug.

Regardless of these factors, there are a couple of things everyone should know about this drug:
  • The initial high obtained by using crack cocaine does not last long.
  • Crack is highly addictive.

Initial Effects

Crack cocaine is a stimulant. Many people who use this drug initially experience a high that makes them feel more alert and energetic. Some users may feel as though they are invincible.

This initial exhilaration is usually quickly followed by a depressed state. Users oftentimes return to this drug in order to once again experience the initial exhilaration without much regard for the subsequent depressed state that they will almost inevitably experience.

Physical/Neurological Effects

The effects of crack cocaine can be profound on the central nervous system. This drug forces an increase in the production of dopamine which is a neurotransmitter found in the brain. This increase in dopamine creates the feeling of exhilaration that comes from using this drug.

Crack cocaine also changes the user's blood pressure, respiration and temperature, all of which can lead to bigger health problems.

Smoking Crack

The method utilized to ingest crack cocaine can also have a lasting effect on the user. For example, people who snort crack cocaine can have obvious physical repercussions including:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Decreased or total loss of smell
  • Decreased ability to swallow

Mental Effects

The effects of crack cocaine go beyond the physical repercussions. People who use crack cocaine may initially feel exhilarated and alert, but this can quickly be replaced by feelings of anxiety, depression and even delusions.

It is not uncommon for crack cocaine users to act aggressively toward other people while high on this drug.

Fatal Consequences

People who have pre-existing heart conditions, or who use crack cocaine incessantly, put themselves at high risk for death when using this drug.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, all users of crack cocaine are at risk for death, even if they are only occasional users.
