About Addiction and Recovery

Addiction and recovery have one specific thing in common—neither occurs overnight. Addictions usually develop slowly over time. In some cases, it may take as little as one week for a person to become addicted to a drug or behavior. In other cases, it may take months or even years to develop a serious addiction problem.

Recovery from an addiction works in a similar fashion. It can take years, or even a lifetime to recover from a serious addiction. There are also many different stages in the actual recovery process.

The first, and most important, stage involves identifying and recognizing that a problem exists. Without admitting to a problem, an addict will be unable to seek the most appropriate treatment.

Seeking Treatment

There is no one treatment that is right for every addiction or every person. If you wish to have a successful recovery, it is imperative that you find the right treatment for your addiction.

Finding treatment may involve evaluating your case, or having someone else evaluate it for you. Special services that can offer assessments, referrals, and treatment recommendation will prove to be helpful in initiating the recovery process.

Holistic Approaches

Holistic approaches to addiction and recovery are also becoming very popular. Holistic methods of treatment focus on treating the body and mind as one. In many cases, holistic practices are coupled with more formal treatment options.

Homeopathy, massage, meditation, and nutrition adjustments are just a few of the holistic approaches that can be incorporated into your treatment. These approaches can be extremely effective at the start of treatment and throughout all of the other recovery phases.

Addiction and Recovery Resources

There are many different addiction and recovery resources that can be found around the web. You may also be able to find resources in your local community.

A Final Note on Recovery

Some people believe that one can never fully recover from an addiction. While this may or may not be a true statement, there are a few things that you can do to achieve sobriety and increase your chances of avoiding destructive behaviors:

  • Controlled withdrawals: The withdrawal process can be difficult to get through. Depending on the addiction, withdrawals can be painful both physically and mentally. In some cases, those suffering from an addiction may need to be medicated to safely remove certain drugs from their system.
  • Continuing treatment: As stated earlier, recovery is not an overnight process. Just because an addict underwent counseling or was inducted into a rehab program for short term treatment, it doesn't mean that the recovery process is over. Addicts with the highest recovery success rate participate in some sort of ongoing treatment or counseling.
  • A support system: Addicts can greatly benefit from a support system throughout the recovery process. Support may come from family and friends or through organizations and associations like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous.
